Regional youth conference hosts over 300 in Aweil


(AWEIL 16JAN)Over three hundred youths from Catholic and other denominations in greater Northern Bahr el Ghazal region have attended five days conference at St George Catholic Aweil parish.

On Wednesday, youth leaders from former Aweil West, Aweil East, Aweil North, Aweil South, and Aweil Center counties and have turned up for the event.

The conference aims at improving youth capacity towards peace, development, and unity in the world’s youngest nation, South Sudan.

Speaking at opening remarks, Gen. Dau Aturjong Nyuol, Commander of South Sudan Defense Forces’ Division 3 and representative of Aweil state governor, has appreciated Aweil Catholic church for conducting the event and urged the youth to embark of peace and education.

Peace is paramount, said the Gen. When he was asked by the Voice News Agency rate value of peace amidst the current situations in the nation.

Speaking also in the opening ceremony, Daniel Akol Diing, representative of Aweil State Governor, said his government is committed to developing the youth to be able to carry out successive achievements in their respective communities.

Rev. Fr. Joseph Majok from Aweil Catholic parish said the church has initiated the plan with hope to change and address too many challenges facing youth in the Country.
Cattle raiding, reprisal killing and robberies are among issues affecting South Sudan youths. The spiritual leader is also urging the youth to avoid politics and wanted them to concentrate on development and word of God.

Andrew Garang Kolong permanent deacon at Catholic Church in the region is warning youth to avoid crimes and seek peaceful means in their future and development.
 “If young people are willing to get something, people are ready to support them. You have a  great chance in the church and better future,” He concludes.


the conference is supported by VISTAS, a USAID funded program in South Sudan.
